A castle (from Latin castellum), is a defensive structure seen as one of the main symbols of the Middle Ages. The term has a history of scholarly debate surrounding its exact meaning, but it is usually regarded as being distinct from the general terms fort or fortress, in that it describes a residence of a monarch or noble and commands a specific defensive territory. Roman forts and hill forts were the main antecedents of castles throughout Europe, which emerged in the 9th century in the Carolingian Empire. The advent of cannon and gunpowder in the mid 13th century changed the needs of warfare in Europe, limiting the effectiveness of the castle and leading to the rise of the fort. Similar constructions in Russia (Kremlin) and feudal Japan (Shiro) are also considered castles. DefinitionFrom Wikipedia under the

Q. I was wondering if anyone knows of schools (colleges) in the Britain area that are in castles? Or a website with a list of some? Ones where you stay all year also, like with different houses within the castle. Asked by Joie - Sat Aug 18 16:47:56 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I don't think there's any castle-type schools. There are schools that look ancient though. Like, decorated to look like gothic cathedrals. I doubt there's a castle-college though. Lol. Wikipedia "List of UK Universities" and it'll give you a list of all of Britain's colleges. Answered by RAWR. - Sat Aug 18 16:55:52 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Castles"
