A meeting and convention planner supervises and coordinates the strategic, operational and logistical activities necessary for the production of events A convention, in the sense of a meeting, is a gathering of individuals who meet at an arranged place and time in order to discuss or engage in some common interest. The most common conventions are based upon industry, profession, and fandom. Trade conventions typically focus on a particular industry or industry segment, and feature keynote. The planner can be employed or hired ad hoc by corporations A corporation is an institution that is granted a charter recognizing it as a separate legal entity having its own rights, privileges, and liabilities distinct from those of its members. There are many different forms of corporations, most of which are used to conduct business, associations, governments A government is the body within a community, political entity or organization which has the authority to make and enforce rules, laws, and regulations.[citation needed], and other organizations.[1][2]

- Although the Occupational Information Network (O*NET), sponsored by the United States Department of Labor The United States Department of Labor is a Cabinet department of the United States government responsible for occupational safety, wage and hour standards, unemployment insurance benefits, re-employment services, and some economic statistics. The department is headed by the United States Secretary of and Employment and Training Administration The mission of the Employment and Training Administration , as part of the U.S. Department of Labor, is to contribute to the more efficient and effective functioning of the U.S. labor market by providing high quality job training, employment, labor market information, and income maintenance services primarily through State and local workforce, identified this occupation as "meeting and convention planner," other titles are more commonly used. These titles include event planner, meeting planner, and meeting manager. In addition, a number of other titles specific to the categories of events produced are used, such as corporate planner and party planner.
- The banquet event order (BEO), a standard form used in the hospitality industry The hospitality industry is a several billion dollar industry that mostly depends on the availability of leisure time and disposable income. A hospitality unit such as a restaurant, hotel, or even an amusement park consists of multiple groups such as facility maintenance, direct operations , management, marketing, and human resources to document the requirements of an event as pertinent to the venue,[3] has presented numerous problems to meeting and convention planners due to the increasing complexity and scope of modern events. In response, Convention Industry Council The Convention Industry Council is a non-profit federation of leading U.S. and international organizations involved in the meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry. CIC’s member organizations represent more than 103,500 individuals and 17,300 firms or properties across all sectors of the industry developed the event specifications guide (ESG) that is currently replacing the BEO.[4]
- Additionally, the Convention Industry Council is spearheading The Accepted Practices Exchange (APEX). By bringing planners and suppliers together to create industry-wide accepted practices and a common terminology, the profession continues to enhance the professionalism of the meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry.

Planners can, but need not, be certified.
